Two, by Kathryn Otoshi

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2—The first stanza of the song "Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other is gold" is, literally, the theme of Otoshi's third book about numbers. Two and One are best friends until Three comes along and disrupts the status quo. Two feels terrible about being left out, but Three convinces One that "odds" are better than the rest," and some verbal teasing ensues. Other odd and even numbers join in the escalating argument until Zero steps in and convinces Two to put a halt to the escalating division. One, Two, and Three apologize for the way they've been acting, and all the numbers, from Zero to Nine, decide it's a good thing to be open to all potential friends. Some lines rhyme, but others don't, which can create a problem in the reading cadence the first time around. This tale, featuring colorful numbers placed on large white pages, presents some clever wordplay and has a moral that will be best understood by children if the book is shared with an adult.—Maryann H. Owen, Children's Literature Specialist, Mt. Pleasant, WI

Review

“Otoshi’s cognitive behavioral approach suggests that heroic action isn’t always something that can be seen; it’s something that happens inside. Clearly meant for public readaloud and classroom discussion, this is a polished, on-message opening for dialogue about bullying, mean girls, and other social plagues.”— Publishers Weekly "Two felt blue. ‘What did I do?’‘Let it go,’ said Zero‘Just ignore them,’ added Four. But Two couldn't let go.At every turn, what did she see?One playing with — Three!"— from the book

I am a HUGE Kathryn Otoshi fan. She has a brilliant grasp of issues children face and a gift for paring those emotional issues down to a basic concept that young and old can appreciate. Her wordplay in all of her works that I have read, One, Zero and now Two, are delightfully clever. That being said, Two is not my favorite. One and Zero seemed effortless. This new metaphor seems a bit too over-thought. It feels as if she has felt pressured to recreate the magic of the previous two publications. I would love to see her try a new angle, something different than the number metaphors. She is a gifted voice in children's literature and I hope she does not pigeonhole herself due to past successes.

I love Kathryn's books! I read them to my second graders to help the discussions of bullying and friendship. She is so creative in using colors and numbers in her stories. The students love the stories. Two is about friendship and how to be a friend. It deals with a common topic with 7 year olds--how to be a friend with more than one person.

Good: Great for kids that love numbers. My 2yo started learning their odds and evens bc of this book. Story is also more solid than most other children's storiesBad: Simplistic art can have you scratching your head why children's books cost so much.Overall: I paid $13.15. Best book among One, Zero, and Two imho. I would buy this in a heart beat again

Our school librarian asked for this book when I wanted to purchase something to THANK our parent volunteers. She read it to my class after it arrived....perfect!

These books are written so creatively in a way that is accurate both to mathematical skills, and social skills. I really appreciate the author's ingenuity.

Awesome book! Kathryn Otoshi is my hero! So creative, well-written and teaches a ton of lessons not only for kids but for me as an adult, a father and just a person who is always trying to improve myself.

This is a great book. I also ordered Zero and One. Read together, they are even better. I used them for a Girl Scout Brownie Journey "It's Your Story" and a Cadette Journey "Amaze." The books fit very nicely into the program.

Great book, love the entire series! These books are great for sparking conversations about behavior and actions. I recommend the entire series, Zero and One!
